Mysterious Rash

So, Emily has a rash.

You may be thinking, all baby's get rashes.  The doctor I talked to on the phone kept telling me that newborns get rashes (I did point out she was 15 months, and he seemed to already know that, so I guess he thinks 15 month olds are newborns).

Or perhaps you are thinking, oh no, she could be sick.

I thought it might be hand, foot, and mouth disease.  He asked a bunch of questions, including if the rash was on the soles of her feet and the palms of her hands.  I told him no.  But, actually, it is, which I didn't notice when Emily was being squirmy and fussy and I was on the phone.  Also, he wanted to know about pus, and I said there wasn't any, but some of the rash spots are pus filled (but not leaking, which is what he asked, I think).

So, I looked up hand, foot, and mouth disease, and it seems like she could have it.  Only, there is nothing we can do for it, except give her pain meds.  Which the doctor told me to do anyway.  And I don't want to take her to the ER just to be told they can't do anything.

Any thoughts on what to do about the rash?

Emily is dropping down to daycare just one day a week already, so we won't have to worry about keeping her home.  But we will be staying home from the zoo today.  It was going to be cold, anyway, so we might not have gone anyway.  But no cousin time for Emily.

  1. When Zoey was about that old she had hand, foot, mouth disease. BUT she got a high fever. She didn't have any rashes on hands or feet ,but the doctor said she had it in her mouth. They gave her a type of liquid lidocain prescription that you swabbed on her checks. It passed quickly. Call her dr back if you think it is getting worse.

I'm sorry. That must be frustrating!
    Hang in there.

Yeah, I don't know. Doctors know so little about rashes, because they have so many possible causes. It's crazy.

I have had many different rashes at different points in my life that doctors have no idea why I got them, and all I've ever been able to do it wait them out. They've always gone away eventually. Although in two cases, it took over three months for them to go away all the way. Once one itched really bad, so I got a prescription steroid cream for it, but other than that I just ignore it or use over-the-counter lotion and then live it out.

If she is showing no other symptoms, such as discomfort, crying, lack of hunger, fever, inability to sleep, etc. then I probably wouldn't worry about it too much. Or if it continues to spread rather than stay the same.

    Hope that helps!!
