Pillows and Travel Car Mat

I recovered my porch chair cushions with the fabric I mentioned in my last post:

And I also whipped up some of these with extra fabric:

And I also made Emily a car play mat, based on blog entries I found, including the great instructions at Homemade by Jill, who also recommended this car play mat in another post.

I combined ideas from the two play mats to make mine, and used a salvaged cuff snap to close it after it is all folded up (and used more of the pillow fabric, which Emily loves).

Emily loves it!  She napped while I sewed it together, and when she woke up (shortly after I finished) I opened it up for her and she was sold.  I think she thinks its a blanket, since she insists on having it over her legs (she recently started loving blankets).  And she loves the little cars I dug out of one of the "when Emily gets bigger" toy boxes.

  1. I love the fabric you made the pillows out of! The travel car mat is adorable! Did you applique stitch the house, road, ect on the mat? You are clever, talented and all around amazing.

  2. I used my sewing machine to applique the house and gas station to the background.

The road was felt, so I just straight stitched along the edge of it. The lines in the road were ribbon, which I wove through the felt, and then sewed one line of stitches down the middle of.

  3. That is awesome! I love that play mat. Emily is such a lucky girl!! And I do like the patterns for the pillows.

At first I kept thinking that you had made a play mat for her to use in the car, and I couldn't figure it out. Haha. Then I felt like an idiot when I realized it was a play mat with a car theme. Haha.

  4. I thought the same thing as Mimi and was confused for a second how it would work, but now I get it and it's so cute! I love it!! I might steal the idea... :) You are so cool, Rachel.
